Bettina Lewin was born in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany. Her cousin remembers that at the age of nine, Bettina was determined to become a photographer. After graduating high school she left for Barcelona, where she started working as a photographer for the independent magazine, V.O. Next she produced a campaign for a Spanish fashion chain using only four rolls of film and one lens...with the art director on set almost having a nervous breakdown. The work was a huge success and was published throughout Spain. Nearly three years later, Bettina moved to Hamburg where she assisted for another three years. She then began working as a beauty editor for twelve years, never fully relinquishing her deep love of photography. In 1998 she established LEWIN, a made-to-measure clothing and accessories company with her husband Thorsten. In 2001, she began working again as a full-time photographer. She divides her time between Hamburg and New York City.
